(Tim Tufuga)Unique to Samoa is the Wahoo label, Malo cannery, which is actually a Thailand fishery company, which features the Samoan waters fished Tuna.
(Tim Tufuga)This particular Wahoo, Malo label, is a Chilli Tuna, drenched in Sunflower oil. Very delicious and well marketed in Chinese and Asian stores in South East Queensland.
It is unfortunate that offshore owned companies, rich in resources, are able fish, can and label Samoan fish as their own products and market them as Made in Thailand products.
It is a sorry state of affairs for Samoa, when the profits from their maritime waters end up being foreign owned, and profits from the largesse from the Samoan 200 nautical miles of Economic Exclusive Zone waters, are fished, canned in Samoa but are marketed as products of foreign companies. In the meantime, Samoa gains nothing.
Such examples of political economic malversation is troubling and as long as Samoans lack the wherewithal with fishing industry strategic planning and development they will always be impoverished like any other third world underdeveloped countries.
Papua New Guinea is resource rich with minerals, but, larger economies from OECD member nations continue to extract the minerals at PNG Government and their socioeconomic expense.
Samoan fishing industry is a case in point of short term economic gain for some fishing industry administrators and Political decision makers, but, a long term loss for the national economy.
The importers to Queensland are Yuvi Pty Ltd, Coopers Plains, Queensland.
